Career Overview
Fish hatchery managers raise fish as cash crops or for release into bodies of fresh or salt water. Their responsibilities include tracking fish life cycles and growth rates and controlling disease. The biggest challenge for fishery managers is integrating innovative methods of breeding and trapping fish that are environmentally conscientious and economically profitable. Fishery managers also supervise workers and prepare budget reports required by state and federal law.
Education
A four-year bachelor's degree in fisheries science or a related field is likely required to obtain this position.
Future Outlook
Employment of farmers, ranchers, and other agricultural managers is projected to decline 6 percent from 2019 to 2029.
Work Environment
Fish hatchery managers work in fish hatcheries! They will spend time in an office, but they will also spend a lot of time outdoors monitoring holding pens and incubators. Be ready to handle fish and to get dirty!
