Ironworkers install, assemble, and repair structural and reinforcing iron and steel used in buildings, bridges, roads, and other structures. They position and secure steel components, work with rebar and structural frameworks, and may use welding, cutting, rigging, and other specialized equipment.
A high school diploma or equivalent is commonly recommended, followed by a 2–4 year apprenticeship or trade training program. Training typically covers ironworking techniques, blueprint and drawing interpretation, welding, rigging, equipment operation, and workplace safety.
Ironworkers should continue to be needed for new construction as well as the repair, replacement, and maintenance of existing buildings, bridges, roads, and other infrastructure. Employment is expected to remain steady, with opportunities also created as experienced workers retire or move into other roles.
Ironworkers work primarily on construction sites and in industrial settings, both indoors and outdoors. The work can involve heights, heavy materials, physically demanding tasks, and changing weather conditions. Safety training and protective equipment are an important part of the job.
