Career Overview

Cinematographers are in charge of shooting videos, which may involve coordinating the crew, working with lighting, and working with the director to make sure each shot is exactly how the director would like to see it. Video camera operators operate video cameras and related equipment to record news, live events, films, videos and television broadcasts.

Education

A four-year bachelor's degree in film production, cinematography, broadcasting, communications, or a related field would be very helpful while trying to secure this position. A higher degree (master's or doctorate) in a related field, which may take an additional two-five years to earn, would be even more valuable. It is possible to enter this profession without a degree or diploma.

Future Outlook

Employment of film and video editors is projected to grow 22 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Work Environment

Film and video editors and camera operators typically work in studios or in office settings. Camera operators and videographers often shoot raw footage on location.
